OverviewSilves is a very popular location for Algarve day trips and excursions. Silves was once the capital of the whole district and evidence shows that it was already a place of note in Roman times but that it really became an important place during its occupation in the early 11th Century by the Moors who built palaces and created Silves as a cultural centre of learning. Silves is now a major tourist attraction as a town of great historical and cultural interest. Historic sights include Silves' glorious Moorish Castelo (castle) and the adjacent Igreja Misericoridia Cathedral. Just below the cathedral sits the informative Museum of Archeology, and move further down from the castle for a visit to the Museum of Cork - Silves' award winning museum. Silves has in recent times been a hub for Portuguese cork production - this museum is not to be missed. Silves retains much of its former charm in the streets of the old 'almedina', which are still laid out as they were in medieval times.DirectionsSilves is about a 30 minute drive from LagosAttractions
